Boost Your Immune System

If you value your immune system zinc is an important nutrient to be thinking about. Zinc regulates production of cytokines by immune cells. These stimulate and synchronise the immune response. This is important because it regulates and reduces inflammation. Zinc also helps with :

  1. Growth

  2. Wound healing

  3. Vision

  4. Protecting cells against oxidative stress (free radical damage). Zinc is needed for our body to make the vital antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase, which protects us against superoxide free radicals – the most harmful type of free radical.

  5. Fertility and reproduction

  6. Taste and smell

  7. Maintenance of good testosterone levels in the blood

  8. Thyroid hormone function, which controls metabolism

  9. Metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins

  10. Skin health

  11. Acid-alkaline balance

Strenuous exercise requires the clearance of free radicals. Optimal levels of zinc can help athletes recover more effectively from training and competition. If you are attending any of our fitness classes or working out hard in the gym, zinc could be something to make sure you are getting enough of!

Foods that are rich in zinc are oysters – they are by far the highest source. A serving of six oysters can contain up to 70 mg of zinc. So one or two servings per week can provide all the zinc you need! Beef, lamb liver, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and nuts like cashews and pine nuts.

If you are unsure if you have enough zinc in your diet you can consult with a nutritionist who can help you. It is best not to consume more than a total of 30mg of zinc per day in supplements for an extended period of time however.

If you are interested in a good recovery supplement R5 Aminos is a good place to start.
